BURNOUT


Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion resulting from extreme stress. This condition usually occurs as a result of long-term and intense stress in business life, social relationships, or other areas of life. Burnout has several symptoms. Here are some of the main features of burnout:


1- Emotional Exhaustion:

  • Loss of energy: The person loses energy and motivation toward their job.

  • Emotional emptiness: The person feels emotionally empty and experiences negative emotions toward their responsibilities.


2 -Mental and Physical Fatigue

  • Problems with Concentration: The person finds it difficult to focus on tasks and feels mentally exhausted.

  • Physical Symptoms: Physical symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, and stomach issues may occur.


3- Low Performance and Inefficiency

  • Loss of Motivation: The person loses motivation, leading to decreased performance.

  • Poor Work Results: The person's efficiency decreases, and they find it difficult to complete tasks at work.


4- Negative Thoughts and Social Isolation

  • Negative Thoughts: The person develops negative thoughts about work and social relationships.

  • Social Withdrawal: The person withdraws from their social circle and reduces interactions with others.

 


Reasons for Burnout and Risk Factors

Excessive Workload: An excessive workload leads to stress, loss of motivation, and psychosomatic problems. It also causes people to work under pressure.


Lack of Control: The person lacks sufficient authority and control over their tasks.


Lack of Support: Not receiving enough support and recognition at work.


Insufficient Resources: Inadequate working conditions and lack of necessary resources.


In addition to these, many other factors can contribute to burnout. These reasons may vary based on the type of job, working conditions, gender, and other aspects.

Stress Management:Using stress-coping strategies such as meditation, exercise, relaxation techniques, and engaging in hobbies.


Work-Life Balance:Establishing a healthy balance between work and personal life.


Seeking Support:Obtaining psychological support or counseling and accessing social support systems.


Reviewing Working Conditions:Reducing workload, rearranging tasks, and improving working conditions.

 

Burnout can create feelings of stress and exhaustion not only in the workplace but also in personal life. Therefore, it is important for both individuals and organizations to develop effective strategies to prevent and manage burnout. Additionally, self-compassion, peer, and family support are crucial and have positive effects during this process.
